There's no denying that staying in shape is hard work and not only that, it can also be extremely boring doing the same things week in and week out.

Both indoor and outdoor skating are great ways to burn those calories. According to Fitness Magazine quad skating burns up to 482 calories in an hour which is pretty impressive, but did you know that In-line skating burns even more calories? In fact an hour of inline skating can burn up to 600 calories!

2. Great Aerobic Workout

As a cardiovascular activity it also gets your heart in shape. 30 minutes of roller skating can raise your heart rate to 148 beats per minute, resulting in weight loss and a reduced risk of weight related ailments like heart disease and diabetes.

3. Works Most Muscle Groups

Roller skating is the ultimate all body workout as it works most muscle groups including the Glutes, the Calves, the Abs, Quads and Arms meaning that not only can roller skating help you to lose weight but it will also help you tone up too!

4. Gentle on the Joints

Running, walking and dancing etc, can wreak havoc on the joints for some, especially the knees, but roller skating is different. All disciplines of skating are low-impact so whilst you still gain all the same benefits that running has to offer by skating, you lose the harsh impact on your joints by up to 50%. In fact, because it’s a low-impact activity, skating can be a great aerobic alternative for those with joint problems or injuries.

5. Roller Skating is Safer

Yes, roller skating is safer than most other sports. Ok I'm not talking about the grazed knees if you fall, that's what knee pads are for. I mean that skating is one of the safest sports with regards sports related injuries. Skating is 3 times safer than football, rugby and tennis. 4 times safer than basket ball and 5 times safer than cycling.

6. Roller Skating makes you Happy!

We all know that we need to keep our bodies healthy but we also have to keep our minds healthy too. Skating clears the mind and minimises mild forms of depression and stress. It reduces bad hormones and while it does this it increases the endorphin's in the body, which are commonly known as the 'happy hormones' and if you roller skate with friends you'll have even more fun!
