6 Reasons why Roller Skating is THE way to stay Healthy

Updated: Jan 16

There's no denying that staying in shape is hard work and not only that, it can also become extremely boring doing the same things week in, week out.

But what if there was a way to lose weight, improve your fitness and actually enjoy yourself so much that you'll want to do it all the time?

Roller Skating is really one of the move enjoyable ways to stay healthy and here's why.

1. Burn Calories

Both indoor and outdoor skating are great ways to burn those calories. According to Fitness Magazine, quad skating can burn up to 482 calories in an hour, which is pretty impressive - but inline skating can burn even more. In fact, an hour of inline skating can burn up to 600 calories!

Not bad for something that doesn't feel like exercise at all.

2. Great Aerobic Workout

As a cardiovascular activity, roller skating gets your heart working efficiently. Just 30 minutes of skating can raise your heart rate significantly, supporting weight loss and helping to reduce the risk of weight-related conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

3. Works Most Muscle Groups

Roller skating is a brilliant full-body workout. It engages the glutes, calves, quads, core and even the arms - especially as balance and confidence improve.

That means that skating doesn't just help with weight loss, it also helps to tone and strengthen the body naturally.

4. Gentle on the Joints

Running, walking and even dancing can put a lot of strain on the joints, particularly the knees. Roller skating is different.

All disciplines of skating are low-impact, meaning you still get the fitness benefits of activities like running, but with significantly less stress on your joints — often up to 50% less impact. This makes skating a great aerobic option for those managing joint issues or returning from injury.

5. Roller Skating is Safer

Roller skating is actually one of the safer sports when it comes to injury rates. While grazed knees can happen (that’s what pads are for), skating has a lower injury rate than many popular sports.

In fact, skating is:

  • around 3 times safer than football, rugby, or tennis

  • 4 times safer than basketball

  • 5 times safer than cycling

6. Roller Skating makes you Happy!

Physical health matters — but mental health matters just as much.

Skating helps clear the mind, reduce stress, and improve mood. It lowers stress hormones while increasing endorphins (often called the “happy hormones”). Add friends, music, and movement into the mix and the mental health benefits multiply.

Thinking of giving skating a go?

The fitness benefits of roller skating really are incredible. If your current fitness routine feels dull — or you’re looking for something you’ll actually stick with — roller skating is well worth a try.
